Did You Know? The Secret Science of Blue Flambé

If you are a fan of Royal Doulton, you know that Flambé Red is their signature. But have you ever wondered why you rarely see Blue Flambé?

It all comes down to the "Magic of the Kiln."

1. A Different Chemistry

Traditional Flambé gets its deep red color from copper oxide. To turn that red into the stunning "Electric Cobalt" or "Cerulean" blue seen on the Centenary Penguin, the master glaze burners had to introduce different metallic oxides—often cobalt or titanium—and fire them under very specific "reducing" atmospheres.

2. The Temperature "Sweet Spot"

Blue Flambé is notoriously temperamental. If the kiln is just a few degrees too hot, the blue burns away. If it’s too cool, the glaze looks muddy. Because it was so difficult to "hit" the perfect blue, Royal Doulton produced significantly fewer blue pieces than red.

3. The Centenary Rarity

In 2004, to celebrate 100 years of Flambé, Royal Doulton brought back these rare blue glazes for a very limited time. These "Centenary" pieces—like our Leaping Penguin—were a tribute to the original 1904 experiments.

Collector’s Tip: When you find a Blue Flambé piece in Mint Condition, hold onto it! Because of their limited production runs and the difficulty of the glazing process, they are considered some of the most "investment-grade" ceramics in the Doulton catalog.
