How To Clean Your Hummels

The Collector's Guide: How to Safely Clean Vintage Hummel Figurines

Unlike the thick, high-gloss finishes found on standard ceramics, vintage Goebel Hummel figurines are renowned for their delicate, matte appearance. This signature aesthetic is achieved by firing high-quality Bavarian clay and applying meticulous, hand-painted brushstrokes.

While this matte finish gives the figures their incredibly lifelike warmth and texture, it also means the porcelain is slightly porous. Dust, fireplace soot, and cooking oils can easily settle into the intricate crevices of the sculptor's design.

Whether you have just inherited a family heirloom or acquired a new piece for your collection, here is the professional, step-by-step method to safely clean and preserve your vintage matte porcelain.

Level 1: Routine Dusting (The Dry Method) 🖌️

For regular maintenance, you should avoid using liquids entirely. The goal is to gently lift dust without rubbing it deeper into the porous surface.

  • Never use cloth rags or paper towels. The rough fibers can catch on delicate sculpted fingers, flower petals, or bird wings, causing accidental breaks.
  • Use a natural bristle brush. A high-quality, clean makeup brush (like a large powder brush) or a soft artist's paintbrush is the safest tool.
  • The Technique: Hold the figurine firmly by its solid base over a soft surface, like a folded towel. Gently sweep the brush downwards, working the bristles lightly into the textured folds of the clothing and the fine details of the hair.

🏛️ Curator's Note: The dry dusting method is especially crucial for highly intricate porcelain figures and our hand-carved wooden pieces, where moisture should be strictly avoided. Click here to explore the deeply textured craftsmanship in our pristine Anri Wood Carving Gallery.

Level 2: Deep Cleaning (The Wet Method) 💧

If a figurine feels slightly tacky to the touch or has accumulated years of deep-set grime, it is time for a careful wet wash.

  • The Setup: Place a rubber mat or a thick towel in the bottom of your sink to prevent accidental chipping. Fill two small bowls with room-temperature distilled water (hard tap water can leave mineral deposits on matte finishes).
  • The Soap: Add just a single drop of a mild, colorless dish soap (like original Dawn) to one of the bowls. Never use bleach, ammonia, or abrasive chemical cleaners, as these will strip the delicate hand-painted color palettes right off the fired clay.
  • The Technique: Dip a soft-bristled brush or a cotton swab into the soapy water. Gently dab the soiled areas, allowing the mild soap to lift the dirt. Do not scrub aggressively. Use the second bowl of clean water to rinse the brush and dab away the soapy residue.
  • The Golden Rule: Never submerge your vintage figurines. Most vintage porcelain pieces have a small "breathing hole" on the bottom from the firing process. If water gets trapped inside the hollow interior, it can cause the piece to mold or crack from the inside out over time.

🏛️ Curator's Note: When older, mid-century pieces are properly wet-cleaned, their original vibrancy is completely revitalized. Click here to shop our meticulously evaluated, display-ready Early Trademark (TMK-1 & TMK-2) estate finds.

Curing and Curated Home Placement

Once the piece is clean, gently pat the large smooth areas with a lint-free microfiber cloth and leave the figurine to air dry completely on a soft towel in a well-ventilated room for at least 24 hours.

To preserve the delicate hand-painted brushstrokes and matte finish for future generations, display your newly cleaned centerpiece away from direct, harsh sunlight—ideally in a glass-enclosed curio cabinet situated in a softly lit formal dining room or a shaded hallway console.
