The Hummel Club: A Legacy of Exclusivity and Connection

For nearly half a century, the M.I. Hummel Club has been the heartbeat of the Goebel collecting community. 🎖️🐝 Founded in 1977 by W. Goebel Porzellanfabrik as the Goebel Collectors’ Club (and renamed the M.I. Hummel Club in 1989), this international society was created to give devoted enthusiasts an insider connection to the Rödental studios and the convent artistry of Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel.

At BuyHummels.com, collectors frequently ask us: "What makes a Hummel Club piece different from a standard production figurine?" The answer lies in the strictly guarded "Members Only" redemption history, specialized backstamps, and master sculptor provenance that make these exclusives some of the most sought-after treasures on the secondary estate market.

The Birth of an Exclusive Collector Community (1977) 📜🎟️

When the Goebel Collectors’ Club launched in 1977—with Gerhard Skrobek’s Valentine Gift (#387) serving as the inaugural Year 1 Exclusive—it pioneered the concept of the European porcelain collectors' society. Members received the quarterly Insights magazine, invitations to local chapter gatherings and factory signings with Chief Sculptors Gerhard Skrobek, Helmut Fischer, and Marion Huschka, and a personalized paper redemption voucher.

Most importantly, that voucher granted members the right to purchase Exclusive Club Figurines. These designs were never sold to the general public on open retail shelves; you had to be a card-carrying member in that specific membership year—or earn a 5-, 10-, 15-, or 20-year loyalty redemption certificate—to acquire one.

How to Identify an Authentic Hummel Club Piece 🔎

If you are evaluating an estate collection, there are four primary hallmarks that distinguish a genuine Hummel Club Exclusive from a standard open-edition mold:

  • The Special Club Backstamp & Bumblebee Logo: Turn the figurine over and inspect the base alongside the standard TMK-5 through TMK-8 trademark. Club exclusives feature the printed "Goebel Collectors' Club" or "M.I. Hummel Club" emblem (often paired with the stylized black-and-gold bumblebee decal or membership year date).
  • The "Exclusive Edition" & Tenure Decals: Many pieces bear the words "Exclusive Edition", "5-Year Membership", or "10-Year Membership" applied in underglaze script on the underside—such as our in-stock #2104 Sunflower Friends (5-Year Club Exclusive).
  • Distinctive Craftsmanship & Color Palettes: To reward loyal club members, Goebel’s Rödental master painters decorated these releases with extra-fine hand-painted brushstrokes and rich Bavarian mineral color palettes beneath a velvety satin-matte glaze—providing a warm, tactile contrast when displayed beside the natural alpine maple wood grain of Italian ANRI Club carvings, the deep oxblood reduction glazes of Royal Doulton Flambé, and the high-gloss pastels of Spanish Lladró Privilege releases.
  • Companion Miniatures & Display Plaques: In addition to full-sized exclusives, the club issued yearly membership gifts and petite cabinet miniatures designed to tuck neatly beside matching Hummelscapes and Anniversary Plaques.

Notable M.I. Hummel Club Highlights in Our Vault 🏆

Some of the most beloved molds in Goebel history debuted exclusively through the club:

Why Collectors Target Closed-Edition Club Pieces Today 💎

Because each annual Hummel Club redemption window closed permanently at the end of its membership year, vintage Goebel-era club exclusives are strictly closed editions whose master molds were retired after production. Acquiring a pristine Club piece from the 1980s, 1990s, or 2000s—especially examples housed in our Original Box Vault—is like unlocking a VIP time capsule of Rödental history.

✨ Curator’s Placement Tip: We recommend staging your M.I. Hummel Club exclusives together on an eye-level, softly lit glass shelf inside a cherrywood curio cabinet or arranged on a Grandmillennial parlor console alongside their matching membership plaques so their delicate brushstrokes and traditional Bavarian colors can shine.

I have 21 pre WWII Hummels that my mother in law traded Army PX food with locals for figurines while in Bamburg and Nuremberg. We wish to sell the entire collection. Only two or three have been mended…all else perfect condition. Can supply photos with undersides with measurements. Most are very rare and nonenever have been sold on marketplace. Not interested in selling online. Willing to work with collectors.

I have a huge collection of Hummel figurines as well as plates and bells. The collection includes 2 Exclusive Special Edition NO.1 For Members of the Goebel Collectors Club.My late husband was a collector in the 70’s, and 80’s. Many many. of these figurines, plates and bells are in thieir original boxes.
I am unsure of what to do with this collection. They are displayed in a large, lit, glass curio cabinet.

My mother began collecting the humble plates in 1977. I have every plate through the early 1990s. She passed four years ago and they are in my possession. I have no use for them. I’m willing to donate them if you will pay for the shipping or come pick them up.
