When collectors seek out vintage heirlooms that celebrate youth, pastoral peace, and the simple joys of the natural world, few collaborations rival the partnership between renowned Spanish illustrator Juan Ferrandiz (1918–1997) and the legendary ANRI workshop in the Italian Alps. 🌲🕊️
Born in Barcelona, Spain, Juan Ferrandiz Castells was a beloved poet, children’s book author, and painter whose tender illustrations of young shepherds, musicians, and peace-loving angels captured hearts across post-war Europe. In the late 1960s, the Riffeser family of St. Christina in Val Gardena invited Ferrandiz to bring his two-dimensional drawings to the Dolomite mountains—launching one of the most celebrated woodcarving series of the twentieth century.
From Two-Dimensional Sketch to Val Gardena Alpine Maple 🪵🎨
What makes the Juan Ferrandiz ANRI collection so remarkable is the seamless translation of his soft watercolor and ink drawings into richly textured, three-dimensional wood sculpture. Guided by Val Gardena Master Carvers like Ulrich Bernardi and Rudi Kostner, ANRI’s artisans utilized the tight, luminous texture of seasoned alpine maple wood grain to add physical depth to flowing shepherd robes, rustic hats, and the delicate feathers of Ferrandiz’s signature doves. 🕊️🐑
Rather than concealing the timber beneath heavy opaque enamels, ANRI’s painters applied translucent, hand-rubbed oil stains and soft pastel color palettes. This technique allows the natural warmth of the ANRI wood grain to glow through every brushstroke—offering an organic, tactile counterpoint to the velvety matte earthenware glazes of Bavarian Goebel M.I. Hummels, the fiery oxblood Flambé glazes of Royal Doulton, and the crystalline sheen of Spanish Lladró.

Appraiser’s Field Guide: 4 Hallmarks of Authentic Ferrandiz ANRI 🔎
- The Signature Woodland Companion: Almost every Juan Ferrandiz design includes a tiny secondary creature—a white dove perched on a shoulder, a lamb at the hem of a robe, a curious squirrel, or a floppy-eared bunny—symbolizing peace and harmony with nature.
- Incised "Ferrandiz" & Master Carver Signatures: Authentic carvings feature the incised "© Ferrandiz" attribution on the base rim alongside the brass or impressed ANRI Italy medallion. Special editions and larger 6- to 10-inch figures are frequently hand-signed on the underside by Master Carver Ulrich Bernardi or Rudi Kostner.
- Scale Pairs (3-Inch Miniatures vs. 6-Inch Standard): Like Australian illustrator Sarah Kay, many Ferrandiz models were carved in both a 3-inch to 4-inch cabinet size and a larger 6-inch to 7-inch gallery size (such as our in-stock 3" and 6.25" versions of Tracker and The Cowboy). Look up any model number in our Complete ANRI Woodcarvings Master Index!
- Articulated Wooden Dolls & Toriart Ornaments: Beyond classic figurines, Ferrandiz designed fully articulated 13.5-inch wooden dolls (like our in-stock "Maria" Doll w/Original Box & COA) and celestial Christmas ornaments.
